Preposition (প্রিপোজিশন): Basic of Preposition

English: A preposition is a word placed before a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase to show its relationship with other words in the sentence.

Bangla: Preposition হলো এমন একটি শব্দ, যা কোনো noun, pronoun বা noun phrase এর আগে বসে বাক্যের অন্যান্য অংশের সঙ্গে তার সম্পর্ক প্রকাশ করে।

Examples / উদাহরণ: at, on, of, off, by, after, from, upon, behind, along, before, between, beside, about, beyond ইত্যাদি।

Types of Prepositions | প্রিপোজিশনের প্রকারভেদ

1. Simple Prepositions | সিম্পল প্রিপোজিশন

English: These are single-word prepositions.

Bangla: শুধুমাত্র একটি শব্দ নিয়ে গঠিত।

Examples: with, by, of, through

2. Double Prepositions | ডাবল প্রিপোজিশন

English: Formed by combining two simple prepositions.

Bangla: দুটি প্রিপোজিশনের সমন্বয়ে গঠিত।

Examples: out of, into, upon

3. Compound Prepositions | কম্পাউন্ড প্রিপোজিশন

English: Created by combining a preposition with a noun, adjective, or adverb.

Bangla: Preposition + noun/adjective/adverb দিয়ে গঠিত। যেমনঃ before (by + fore), beyond (by + yond)

Examples: before, beyond, behind, beside, along, about

4. Phrase Prepositions | ফ্রেইজ প্রিপোজিশন

English: A group of words used as a single preposition.

Bangla: একাধিক শব্দ নিয়ে গঠিত যা প্রিপোজিশনের কাজ করে।

Examples: because of, in front of, instead of

5. Participle Prepositions | পার্টিসিপল প্রিপোজিশন

English: Participles that function as prepositions.

Bangla: যখন participle প্রিপোজিশনের মতো কাজ করে।

Example: Regarding this issue, I know nothing. (regarding = about)

6. Disguised Prepositions | ডিসগাইজড প্রিপোজিশন

English: Prepositions that appear in disguised forms.

Bangla: যখন কোনো প্রতীক বা শব্দ প্রিপোজিশনের পরিবর্তে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

  • It is 10 o'clock. (o' = of)
  • The poor man went a begging. (a = on)

Important Usage Examples | গুরুত্বপূর্ণ প্রিপোজিশনের ব্যবহার

In / At

English: Use in for larger places or time periods, and at for specific locations or times.

Bangla: বড় স্থান বা সময়ের জন্য in এবং ছোট বা নির্দিষ্ট স্থান ও সময়ের জন্য at ব্যবহৃত হয়।

  • He lives at Moghbazar in Dhaka.
  • He came to me at 7 pm in the evening.
  • The man died in 2005.

In / Into

English: In shows static position; into indicates movement or transformation.

Bangla: কোনো কিছুর ভেতরে স্থির অবস্থান বোঝাতে in এবং গতিশীলতা বোঝাতে into ব্যবহৃত হয়।

  • The students are in the classroom.
  • Come into the house.
  • The fruit can be made into jam.

On / In / At (Time Reference)

English: Use on before days/dates, in before months/years, and at before specific times.

Bangla: দিন/তারিখের আগে on, মাস/বছরের আগে in, এবং নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের আগে at বসে।

  • I joined the job at 8 am on Saturday in 2002.

In / Within

English: In refers to the entire period; within means before the period ends.

Bangla: নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের মধ্যবর্তী সময়ে বোঝাতে in এবং সময়সীমার মধ্যে যেকোনো সময় বোঝাতে within ব্যবহৃত হয়।

  • I will be back in a week.
  • I will be back within a week.

In / By / Before / After

English: Use in for general future time, by or before for specific deadlines, and after for past reference.

Bangla: ভবিষ্যতের সাধারণ সময় বোঝাতে in, নির্দিষ্ট সময়সীমার আগে বোঝাতে by বা before এবং অতীত সময় বোঝাতে after ব্যবহৃত হয়।

On / Over / Above

English: On indicates contact with a surface, over suggests directly higher but not touching, and above means at a higher level, possibly not directly over.

Bangla: On ব্যবহার হয় যখন কিছু কিছুর ওপর স্পর্শ করে থাকে, Over বোঝায় সরাসরি উপরে কিন্তু স্পর্শ না করে, Above বোঝায় সাধারণভাবে উঁচুতে থাকা।

  • The sun rose above the horizon.

Under / Below / Beneath

English: Under indicates directly beneath something, below shows a lower position, and beneath is more formal or poetic.

Bangla: Under বোঝায় সরাসরি নিচে, Below বোঝায় নিচু অবস্থান, এবং Beneath সাধারণত আনুষ্ঠানিক বা সাহিত্যিক ভাষায় ব্যবহৃত হয়।

  • The shoes are under the bed.
  • The temperature is below zero.
  • She felt something crawling beneath her feet.

With / By

English: With shows the use of something or companionship, By shows the agent of an action or proximity.

Bangla: With দ্বারা বোঝায় কোনো কিছুর সহায়তা বা কারো সঙ্গে থাকা, আর By বোঝায় কাজের কর্তা বা কাছাকাছি অবস্থান।

  • I wrote the letter with a pen.
  • The book was written by Rabindranath Tagore.
  • She sat by the window.

To / Toward

English: To indicates a specific destination or direction, toward indicates a general direction.

Bangla: To ব্যবহৃত হয় নির্দিষ্ট গন্তব্য বোঝাতে, এবং Toward ব্যবহৃত হয় কোনো দিকে ইঙ্গিত করতে।

  • He went to the market.
  • She moved toward the door.

Between / Among

English: Use between for two items and among for more than two.

Bangla: Between ব্যবহৃত হয় দুই কিছুর মধ্যে, এবং Among ব্যবহৃত হয় তিন বা ততোধিক কিছুর মধ্যে।

  • The money was divided between John and Alice.
  • He was popular among his classmates.

Since / For

English: Since is used for a specific point in time; for is used for a duration of time.

Bangla: Since ব্যবহার হয় নির্দিষ্ট সময় থেকে বোঝাতে এবং For ব্যবহার হয় সময়ের পরিমাণ বোঝাতে।

  • I have been living here since 2010.
  • She has worked here for five years.

About / On

English: About refers to a topic generally; On is used for more specific or formal topics.

Bangla: About ব্যবহৃত হয় সাধারণভাবে কোনো বিষয়ের জন্য, On ব্যবহৃত হয় নির্দিষ্ট বা আনুষ্ঠানিক বিষয়ের জন্য।

  • He spoke about climate change.
  • The report is on global warming.

Off / From

English: Off means separation from a surface; from means origin or starting point.

Bangla: Off বোঝায় কোনো কিছুর ওপর থেকে আলাদা হওয়া; From বোঝায় শুরু বা উৎস।

  • He fell off the ladder.
  • She came from London.

Across / Through

English: Across is used for movement from one side to another; through indicates movement within something (like a tunnel or forest).

Bangla: Across বোঝায় এক পাশ থেকে অন্য পাশে যাওয়া; Through বোঝায় ভেতর দিয়ে অতিক্রম করা।

  • The train went through the tunnel.

Beside / Besides

English: Beside means next to; Besides means in addition to.

Bangla: Beside বোঝায় পাশে থাকা; Besides বোঝায় অতিরিক্ত কিছু।

  • He sat beside his friend.
  • Besides English, she speaks Spanish.

Despite / In spite of

English: Both despite and in spite of are used to express contrast; they mean “although” or “even though.”

Bangla: Despite এবং In spite of দুটোই ব্যবহৃত হয় বিপরীত পরিস্থিতি বোঝাতে, অর্থাৎ "যদিও"।

  • Despite the rain, they played football.
  • In spite of his illness, he went to work.

According to

English: According to is used to refer to someone’s opinion or statement.

Bangla: According to ব্যবহৃত হয় কারো মতামত বা তথ্যসূত্র বোঝাতে।

  • According to the teacher, the exam will be easy.
  • According to the news, the storm is coming.

Out of

English: Out of indicates movement from inside to outside, or a lack of something.

Bangla: Out of বোঝায় ভেতর থেকে বাইরে যাওয়া অথবা কোনো কিছুর অভাব।

Along / Around

English: Along means following the length of something; Around means in a circular direction or nearby area.

Bangla: Along বোঝায় কিছু বরাবর; Around বোঝায় চারপাশে বা আশপাশে।

  • They walked along the river.
  • Children were playing around the park.

Until / Unless

English: Until refers to a point in time; Unless means “if not.”

Bangla: Until ব্যবহৃত হয় নির্দিষ্ট সময় পর্যন্ত বোঝাতে, আর Unless বোঝায় "যদি না"।

  • Wait until I come.
